Detailed game description:

Colossus X Draughts is a computer implementation of the classic board game draughts (known as checkers in the United States), developed by British programmer Martin Bryant and released for MS-DOS in 1993. This game is part of the Colossus series, which includes various strategy games such as chess and backgammon.

The game features both CGA and EGA graphics modes and offers a variety of functionalities to enhance the player experience. Players can save, load, and replay games, as well as undo and redo moves through the 'Backward-step' and 'Forward-step' options. An intriguing 'Blindfold' mode allows players to hide their own pieces, the computer's pieces, or both, adding a unique challenge to the gameplay. The game supports both mouse and keyboard controls, enabling players to choose their preferred input method.
One of the standout features of Colossus X Draughts is its comprehensive opening book, which contains a vast database of opening moves. This extensive collection was a significant strength of the earlier Colossus Draughts program, contributing to its competitive performance in draughts championships during the early 1990s. The game includes a 'Book Keeper' function that allows expert users to modify the database, offering a deeper level of customization and strategy development.
Players have the flexibility to compete against the computer or play both sides in a match. The game offers six types of matches, including tournament and equal time formats, and features game clocks along with three types of draughts pieces. This variety caters to both casual players and serious enthusiasts seeking a tailored gaming experience.
Colossus X Draughts is part of the broader Colossus series developed by Martin Bryant, a programmer renowned for his contributions to computer chess and draughts. His Colossus Draughts program notably won the West of England Championship in June 1990, becoming the first draughts program to triumph in a human tournament. It also secured the gold medal at the 2nd Computer Olympiad in August 1990, outperforming other strong programs of the time.
In summary, Colossus X Draughts stands as a robust and feature-rich simulation of the traditional draughts game. Its combination of advanced functionalities, strategic depth, and user-friendly interface has cemented its place as a notable title in the realm of computer-based board games.
