Seicross is a side-scrolling shooter arcade game developed and released by Nichibutsu in 1984. Known as Sector Zone in Japan, the game was later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) under the title Seicross. In this game, players navigate a futuristic hoverbike, battling enemies and rescuing stranded allies across a series of increasingly challenging stages.
Seicross (NES)
Set on the planet Colura, Seicross presents a conflict between two tribes: the Petras and the Basrah. The aggressive Basrah have forced the Petras underground, leaving many survivors trapped on the planet's surface. Players control the 'Gilgitt Petras,' a specialized rescue bike designed to traverse the hostile environment, collect stranded Petra allies, and combat Basrah forces. The gameplay involves maneuvering through grid-like terrains, avoiding obstacles, and engaging enemy hoverbikers. Players can shoot enemies directly or ram them into walls and other hazards. Collecting fuel power-ups is essential to maintain the bike's energy levels, and rescuing blue-clad Petra survivors contributes to the player's score. The game features alternating stages: odd-numbered levels focus on high-speed action with numerous enemy encounters, while even-numbered levels emphasize navigation through dense obstacles and rough terrain. At the end of each even-numbered stage, players face large dinosaur-like enemies that, when defeated, release additional points. The game loops infinitely, with each cycle increasing in difficulty and introducing new background visuals.
Upon its release, Seicross received positive feedback for its engaging gameplay. Gene Lewin of Play Meter rated the arcade version 8 out of 10, noting that it is 'challenging as well as fun to play.' The game's combination of shooting mechanics, rescue missions, and alternating stage designs offered a varied experience that appealed to arcade enthusiasts.
The NES port of Seicross maintained the core elements of the arcade original, adapting the controls and visuals for the home console. While the graphics and sound were simplified due to hardware limitations, the NES version preserved the fast-paced action and strategic gameplay. Players continued to navigate the Gilgitt Petras through hostile environments, balancing offensive maneuvers with the rescue of allies and resource management.
In subsequent years, Seicross has been re-released on various platforms, including the Wii and Wii U through the Virtual Console service, and more recently on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch as part of the 'Arcade Archives' series. These re-releases have introduced the game to new audiences, allowing both longtime fans and newcomers to experience its classic arcade action.
