Cosmic Creeps is an action game developed and published by Telesys for the Atari 2600 in November 1982. The game was designed by Don Ruffcorn, also known as Donyo. In Cosmic Creeps, players embark on a mission to rescue the 'Cosmic Kids' from the deteriorating orbit of their planet.
Cosmic Creeps (Atari 2600)
The gameplay is divided into two distinct phases:
The Voyage: Players control the 'Orbinaut,' navigating from the bottom to the top of the screen to reach a space station. During this ascent, they must avoid obstacles such as plasma and Space Skeeters. Colliding with these hazards results in the Orbinaut spinning off into space, requiring a restart of the ascent and causing the planet's orbit to decay further.
The Rescue: In this phase, a Cosmic Kid moves across the screen, pursued by one or two Cosmic Creeps. Players, positioned at the space station, must time their shots to eliminate the Creeps without harming the Kid. Successfully guiding the Kid to safety awards points, while any missteps contribute to the planet's orbital decay.
The game concludes if the planet's orbit decays completely or if a Cosmic Creep reaches the upper right of the screen. Advancement to subsequent levels requires accumulating 5,000 points during the Rescue phase, with each new level increasing in difficulty.
Cosmic Creeps received mixed reviews upon release. Critics noted the game's unique concept but pointed out challenges in gameplay clarity and engagement. The graphics were praised for their detail, especially considering the Atari 2600's capabilities. However, some reviewers felt that the game's depth was limited, leading to a fleeting entertainment experience.
