Detailed game description:

MuP: Podivná hra (English: MuP: A Strange Game) is a Czech text-based adventure created in 1999 by two students from the Secondary School of Electrical Engineering in Havířov, Adam Rambousek and Petr Hliněný. The game is divided into three parts and follows the story of two agents from the Washington FBA (Federal Bureau for Adventures) – Freddy and Jana – as they investigate a series of mysterious murders linked to the legendary Mutoid Monster.

The story takes place in the Czech Republic, specifically in the city of Havířov, where the agents arrive to begin their investigation. However, upon landing, they are immediately robbed, forcing them to deal with entirely different concerns before focusing on the murders. The main storyline is filled with exaggeration and absurd situations, making MuP a unique experience in the realm of text-based adventures. The puzzles and character dialogues are designed to keep players engaged, revealing new layers of the story as they progress.
The game is controlled using text commands, which players select through single-letter keyboard shortcuts. Available commands include “EXAMINE,” “GIVE,” “GO,” “TALK,” “USE,” and “TAKE.” Despite its simple format, the game offers robust interaction with the environment and sufficiently challenging logical puzzles that require a creative approach.
Unlike many other text-based adventures of its time, MuP features a soundscape that enhances the atmosphere and makes the gameplay more enjoyable. The simple sounds and music reflect the technical capabilities of the era and add to the overall impression. However, emulating the sound on modern sound cards can be problematic, so it is recommended to select the PC speaker option when configuring sound settings. The music will still play correctly in this mode.
The game was distributed as freeware and remains available for download on various archival websites dedicated to classic games. Its simplicity allows it to be run directly from a command-line interface or a bootable diskette. MuP: Podivná hra has achieved cult status among fans of Czech text-based adventures for its unique humor, nostalgic appeal, and thematic originality.
