From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

PC-Gammon is a DOS-based computer game that simulates the classic board game backgammon. It was developed by Sentient Software and released as shareware in 1992. The game was designed to provide an authentic backgammon experience while leveraging the limited graphical capabilities of DOS-era personal computers.

PC-Gammon featured mouse control, which was relatively advanced for its time, allowing for a more intuitive user experience compared to many other DOS games that relied solely on keyboard input. The game included three different playing styles: Conservative, Aggressive, and 'I'm playing for blood,' enabling players to tailor the gameplay according to their preferred strategies.
While the game offered several difficulty levels, the artificial intelligence of the computer opponent was considered weak by modern standards. This became especially apparent with the emergence of more sophisticated backgammon programs at the turn of the millennium, such as Jellyfish, Snowie, and GNU Backgammon, which introduced much stronger AI capabilities.
Despite its simplicity and the limitations of its AI, PC-Gammon gained popularity among backgammon enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. Its shareware model allowed players to try the game before purchasing the full version, contributing to its distribution and success during the early 1990s. Today, PC-Gammon is remembered as a representative of the early efforts to bring traditional board games into the digital realm during the DOS era.
