From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Slap Shot is an ice hockey game released by Sega in 1990 for the Master System. Its gameplay is similar to Ice Hockey and Blades of Steel. This game allows the option of choosing to play an exhibition match or in a tournament.
Slap Shot has 24 different teams split into three pools. Loosely based on IIHF World Championships pools by the time the game was released, the three groups have different difficulty levels, Pool A being the hardest, Pool B being Normal, and Pool C being easiest. It's not possibly to play teams from different pools.

The individual pools contained the following teams. Pool A: America, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, Soviet Union and West Germany. Pool B: Austria, Denmark, East Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Norway and Switzerland. Pool C: Australia, Bulgaria, China, Hungary, Netherlands, North Korea, South Korea and Yugoslavia.
Slap Shot's visuals are very similar to NES's Ice Hockey (by using the same rink and the players are very very similar to that of Konami's Blades of Steel). However, Slap Shot brought something new to the table that those games did not which it the 'Shot Cam Replay' which was only seen in a hockey game call Face Off! for the DOS back in 1988. But other than that, Slap Shot is a clone of Blades of Steel and Ice Hockey.
The box in which the game was sold contained the following text: 'He's streaking down the left side with the puck. Suddenly, he cuts inside, passes to his teammate in the slot- he shoots, he scores! What a play! Get all of the hard-hitting excitement of real ice hockey with 'Slap Shot'! Shooting, passing, and teamwork on offense, and lots of checking, blocking and general chaos on defense. Play an Exhibition game, or enter the Tournament and play against the top teams in the world! Watch out for the other team's goons, though- they like to fight! If you get in a brawl and come out on the losing end, you'll have 2 minutes in the penalty box to lick your wounds. Accept the challenge- take on and defeat the best in hockey. Once you start, you'll be 'hooked'!'
