From MobyGames:

Chessmaster 3000 is a chess video game developed and published by The Software Toolworks in 1991 for platforms including MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, and Macintosh. As the third installment in the Chessmaster series, it built upon its predecessors Chessmaster 2000 and Chessmaster 2100 by introducing enhanced features and improved gameplay.
The game offers a robust chess engine capable of challenging players across various skill levels, from novices to experts. It includes 16 preset opponents, each with distinct playing styles and strengths, and allows users to create custom opponents by adjusting seven different characteristics.

Additionally, Chessmaster 3000 provides a database of 150 classic games from chess history, enabling players to study and learn from past masters.
Educational tools are a significant aspect of Chessmaster 3000. The game features tutorials that teach the rules of chess and offer advanced strategies for more experienced players. During gameplay, it can highlight all legal moves for a selected piece and indicate pieces in jeopardy, assisting beginners in understanding the game's mechanics. The 'War Room' mode provides insights into the computer's thought process, displaying the positions and moves it analyzes before making a decision.
The user interface includes multiple playfields, such as 2D and 3D boards, and customizable chess sets, including the avant-garde Modern set. Players can access various informative windows, like the 'Thinking' window, which shows the number of positions the computer has evaluated during its turn. The game also offers features like move suggestions, player rating assessments, and the ability to print games, boards, and certificates of achievement.
Upon its release, Chessmaster 3000 received positive reviews for its comprehensive features and adaptability to different skill levels. It was praised for its educational content, user-friendly interface, and the strength of its chess engine. In 1997, PC Gamer UK ranked it the 40th best computer game ever, noting its balance of game options and high-end gameplay.
Overall, Chessmaster 3000 is regarded as a significant advancement in chess software, offering a comprehensive package for both learning and mastering the game of chess.
